A miracle of sugar cane and creativity: rum from Cuba Like many events in Christopher Columbus' life, the introduction of sugar cane to the Caribbean may have been accidental. Little did he imagine that the plant brought from the Canary Islands would revolutionize the economy and change the drinking culture of the world.

First Rum Masters: The evolution of the Bacardí and Havana Club brands but it wasn't until 1862, when the Catalan Facundo Bacardí bought a small distillery in Santiago de Cuba, that Cuban rum made history. Bacardí tested a new formula that used cane molasses and eliminated the product's impurities, resulting in a treasure of the highest quality: Cuban Light Rum. Bacardí remained Cuba's largest rum exporter until 1959. One of the first laws of the revolutionary government was the nationalization of large private companies. Bacardi and Ron Matusalem left Cuba and have been manufacturing abroad ever since. Through the reorganization of the rum industry, Havana Club was reborn.
