Mount Gay Eclipse Silder is a white rum made in Barbados. It is particularly suitable as a cocktail rum and cuts a perfect figure in the Cuban mojito.
The name derives from the fact that the rum's sugar cane-growing region is located on a hill called Mount Gay in the area of St. Lucy in the north of Barbados.

Sugar cane cultivation began in the 17th century when the area was still called Mount Gilboa and five small sugar cane plantations were established there. In the early 1700's William Sandiford bought most of the land and consolidated it into the Mount Gilboa Plantation.

Sandiford's son sold the plantation to John Sober in 1747. Since he and his son Cumberbatch lived in England most of the time, Cumberbatch's friend Sir John Gay Alleyne took over management of the plantation. When Alleyne died in 1801, Cumberbatch wanted to rename the plantation in honor of Alleyne.

Since Mount Alleyne already existed, the plantation was henceforth called Mount Gay.
