Islay may be better known for its peaty whisky, but the Bruichladdich distillery has pulled off a masterpiece with Botanist Gin. The premium gin from the western side of the island has been inspiring gin connoisseurs for years.
The Gin Botanist concentrates on the strengths of the island's flora and puts them wonderfully in the foreground. The diverse nature has much more to offer than peat and barley malt. With its 46% vol., Botanist is perfect for a gin and tonic, the gin can be diluted a good bit and you can still see the character of the island.
The selection on the island is large and all you can take credit for a whole range of carefully selected botanicals. Orris roots, coriander seeds, peppermint and cassia bark make their way into the mix, as do thistle, myrtle and mugwort. Which ingredients, besides juniper, end up in Bruichladdich's gin is of course a little secret. If you have the time you can take a trip to Islay and explore the flora. For those who find that too complex, this bottle of gin with its aromas and flavors might be enough
